Anatomy of a Newman Roof
Decking
A new roof is only as good as the deck it's installed onto. For homes built prior to 1950, we recommend installing plywood over any old planking board to ensure the integrity and longevity of all roofing components attached to the roof deck.

Underlayments
We offer two types of CertainTeed synthetic, lightweight premium underlayments which outperform felt and outlast other synthetic underlayments.
- CertainTeed RoofRunner®
- Designed for use on roof decks as a water-resistant layer beneath asphalt roofing shingles, this scrim-reinforced underlayment includes a special top-surface treatment that provides excellent slip resistance, even when wet.
- CertainTeed DiamondDeck®
- A synthetic, scrim-reinforced, water-resistant underlayment that can be used beneath shingles, shake, metal, or slate roofing. It has exceptional dimensional stability compared to standard felt underlayments.
- CertainTeed WinterGuard Ice & Water Shield®
- Per the Ohio Building Code, we will always install ice & water shield. This waterproof, protective moisture barrier prevents leaks from ice dams and wind-driven rain in vulnerable areas — eaves, valleys, walls, chimneys, skylights, soil pipes, and furnace pipes.

Drip Edge
Drip edge is a critical component of any high-quality roofing system. It adds a finished look and additional waterproofing to your home and helps water flow directly into your gutters. All of our drip edging is made from corrosion-resistant materials.
- Eave Edge
- Commonly referred to as gutter apron, eave edge is installed on any apron that gutters are attached to. We use a commercial-grade eave edge with hemmed edges.
- Rake Edge
- The rake is the slanting edge of a gable roof at the end of the house. We install commercial-grade rake edge on all rakes — the rake edge sits on top of the trim on your home.

Valleys — open vs. closed
The slopes of your roof are designed to wick water away and direct it toward your gutters. The valleys are responsible for removing water from your roof when it rains. There are two types of valleys: closed and open. Both are covered by the same warranty and are installed on top of a strip of ice & water shield which will run the entire length of the valley for added protection.
- Closed Valleys
- Commonly referred to as the "California Cut," we install shingles along the length of the valley in an overlapping application. This process ensures protection from water leakage.
- Open Valleys
- We install a 29-gauge pre-painted galvalume along the entire length of the valley, again ensuring protection from water leakage throughout the roof system. Valley metal is available in black, bronze, and brown.

Intake Ventilation
Attic ventilation makes a huge difference when it comes to installing a high-quality roof. Proper ventilation will remove moisture and heat from your home while extending the life of a roof. Proper ventilation also reduces the risk of problems in the future by minimizing the temperature differential between the attic and the air outside.

Exhaust Ventilation
For a ridge vent to work properly, the attic must have adequate intake of fresh, cool air. As the ridge vent expels hot, humid air, intake vents feed fresh cool air into the attic.
- Ridge Vent
- A ridge vent is an important part of a home's roofing system. Ridge vent is installed at the peak of a sloped roof and allows damp, warm air to escape from the attic. When installed properly, a ridge vent can increase energy efficiency and prolong the life of your roof.
- Hat Vents
- Hat vents are installed along roof ridges and can take the place of ridge vent in areas where there is not a sufficient amount of ridge to vent through.
- Cap Master
- We install Cap Master pipe covers to protect the rubber gaskets from harmful UV rays and deterioration.

Bath Vents
When installed properly, bath and kitchen vents play a critical role in keeping your attic ventilated and moisture free. This entails venting the bath or kitchen fan through the roof using an insulated flexible duct hose and Lomanco's SS0 Pro hat vent — which features a removable service cap. Exhausting bath and kitchen vents into the attic can cause moisture problems and rot, leading to costly repairs.

Chimney Flashing
Rainwater is by far the most difficult element to control, and a reliable roof flashing acts as the last line of defense against leaks. Our chimney flashings are custom-made in our metal shop, which ensures a precise and dependable fit. All of our chimney flashings are available in black, bronze, and brown.
A leaking chimney can cause all sorts of issues which could require costly repair. When we go on service calls related to leaks around the chimney flashing, we often find that the source of the trouble is faulty flashing installation by other contractors. The flashing is sheet metal installed in order to ensure that the connection between the chimney and roof is watertight.

Dead Valleys
A dead valley is an area on a roofing system created by the junction of two slopes, or a slope with a wall, where water cannot run off the roof easily. These areas are very low-sloped and sometimes completely flat. Similarly to any low-sloped roof, proper low-sloped materials should be used here that can handle slow water run-off without premature deterioration occurring.

Flintlastic — low slope
For a roof with a pitch that is below 2/12, we install CertainTeed Flintlastic, a low-slope modified bitumen roofing system. Flintlastic is a premium, self-adhering bitumen roofing material that comes in a variety of colors to match the rest of your roof.

Skylights
Are you considering adding skylights to your home or replacing older ones? Skylights are a great addition to your home as they allow the opportunity for natural light to enter your home. We highly recommend replacing the skylights during your roof replacement due to the complexity. Not only will you have the comfort of a waterproof seal, but you'll also save money — it's less costly to have them replaced in conjunction with the roof.
During & after the installation
Property Protection & Cleanup
Throughout the installation process, we do our best to protect your property. Our on-site job supervisors are happy to answer any questions you may have on installation day.
Once your roof has been completed, our crews make sure all gutters are cleaned out. We then use a magnetic sweeper around the entire property to ensure all loose nails and other metallic debris are cleaned up. We also run blowers on all decks, patios, and driveways. We'll treat your property as if it were our own — our goal is to leave your property as clean or cleaner than it was when we arrived.
Beyond the roof
Seamless Gutters & Gutter Guards
Available in 5" or 6" options, our custom seamless gutter systems are made of Ply Gem Mastic's highest-quality .027" and .032" thick premium aluminum coil metal — which comes in a variety of colors to match perfectly. Add a Gutter Protection System to prevent buildup of debris inside your gutters and spend less time cleaning them out.
Like both asphalt & metal?
Consider a Metal Accent Roof
Over the last several years, there has been an increasing interest in metal roofing. Adding a metal accent roof to your roofing system can add a modern touch while adding dimensionality to the curb appeal of your home.
Aside from the fresh aesthetic of a metal roof, there are also benefits in terms of durability and longevity in comparison to other roofing products.
In our customers' words
Choose the Newman Experience
"Newman Roofing did an excellent job installing our new roof! Their price was very fair and the representative did not push us for a fast decision. The installation was on time and expertly done. The workers were both efficient as well as very polite and tidy. The clean-up afterward was very thorough — which our 4 dogs appreciated! I would very highly recommend this company!"
"Best contractor experience we've had in Columbus. Very professional and timely but the organization of the process really set them apart to us. Big bonus was having someone onsite to share what was going on and answer questions. 5 stars."
